Chinese Arts & Cultural
Center
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
The CABA Art and Cultural Center, the centerpiece and future focal point
of the South Florida Chinese American and Asian American communities, has
been a long-time goal of the Chinese American Benevolent Association. First
proposed for a site in Miami many years ago, the project was continued
for a period of time until 1994 when the project was revived and a new
site located in Southwestern Broward County. By then, the South Florida
Chinese American and Asian American communities had grown significantly
and spread across Broward, Dade and Palm Beach Counties. It was felt that
this site would be a central location for the South Florida community.
Initial planning for the Art and Cultural Center had started when it was
announced that the CABA was the recipient of a grant of $190,000 from the
State of Florida to support the development and expansion of the facility.
This award to the CABA was the First grant even received by the Asian American
organization in the history of the state for this type of construction.
After exploring several proposals offered to the CABA, the Board of
Directors have decided to locate the future art and cultural center on
2.5+ acres of land just east of Interstate 75 and Sheridan Street in Southwestern
Broward County. The proposed center will be constructed in multiple phases
with the first phase to be the construction of main structure consisting
of 6,500 square feet of space complete with an auditorium, kitchen facility,
office space, meeting rooms, storage and exhibition space. With the construction
of this facility, the Chinese American and Asian American communities will
truly have a facility of their own to serve the needs of our communities
and other organizations and communities in the South Florida area. We invite
each of you to share in the realization of a 30-year dream that our Association
has envisioned and participate in everything that this facility has to
offer.
