Since the 1900s, there has been a population in South Florida that has
enriched our community and given in a silent way a wealth to our culture.
The lives of many Chinese men and women have provided a character unseen
and until now. Chines'e in Southeast Florida 1900-1992 gives us the history,
the contributions, and the stimulus the Chinese people have provided to
the formation and
growth of South Florida. Josephine Shih Gordy has captured the essence
of what has gone unnoticed for almost a century.
This book is an affirmation of the selfless ways of a community that have made a marked difference in all our lives; it relates the essence of love and commitment to our society. It reminds me of the essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which illustrates the importance of contributions by singular individuals, acting in community, to the growth and enrichment ofany society.
This book honors the heartfelt contributions of so many Chinese people who have come to South Florida from all corners of the world. The time for their recognition is here, with the appearance of this book.
